In 2005 two thirds of homicide victims in SC were black; one third were white. Lastly, black women are five times as likely to suffer domestic abuse in SC than white women. An inconvenient truth perhaps. So, yes, I think it is relevant that I'm white and most crimes are against blacks. Sorry if the truth hurts, but I'd rather know the facts than live in a bubble.

So there is a greater number of black on black killings than black on white ones, yet you are fearful even though statistically you are less likely to be killed because you are white?! I rest my case. I'm sure you don't have a degree in statistics.

There are also over 11,000 known sexual predators in South Carolina....thought you might like to add that to your other statistics

Ian

It is amazing how afraid people are. I have strange behaviours like people closing their car doors before I can attempt a GTA, people cross the road on my approach, and seniors stop and look at me until I pass them on the street.

I really baffles me, even though I have never been in any trouble with the cops.

As I always think, the ignorant little minds can only be contained in little brains; they think I'm a violent thief, I think they're stupid as they come.

G52 unless you're planning on living in some black ghetto, I seriously doubt you have anything to worry about. Just stay as far away as possible from the city limits of Columbia and live where middle class Americans live, IN THE SUBURBS. Don't worry there will be no black gangsters actively looking to target white newcomers into SC ;) and remember one thing, not all black people are criminals or potential criminals! :p

With the mentality of Mark Sanford and Joe "you lie" Wilson in SC, maybe her answer wasn't so stupid after all  At least they fired this one...

Columbia is not full of crime, it's just about the same as anywhere else. Seems very safe to me. I know people who don't lock their doors at night. It's a very friendly middle-sized southern city. Blacks and whites mingle very freely in the Carolinas, and subdivisions are only segregated by how much money you have! There are some huge million dollar homes around Lake Murray, and also some log cabins - next door to each other.

The cost of living is very reasonable, and property taxes are very low. The schools in Columbia are up to par with anywhere else. It's a University town, with a medical school, and a big VA hospital. It is the state capital. Fort Jackson is the biggest Army training base in the country. There are beautiful homes within the city limits. Bars and clubs. A river walk. A zoo that is rated within the top 10% in the country, with a botanical gardens attached.

Columbia is 100 miles from the coast, Charleston and beautiful beaches.

It is just over 100 miles from the foothills of the Smoky mountains.

BMW is located in Greenville, SC, Boeing is relocating it's new plant from Seattle to Charleston. Pirelli, Michelin, Blue Cross and UPS have a big presence in Columbia.

The idea that Columbia is falling over with crime is funny. This is a polite, mannerly, beautiful mid-sized southern town, where you would feel very relaxed to live. There is a dam over Lake Murray with a bike track and walking track over it, always filled with joggers and walkers, same as the river walks downtown. There are beautiful old homes and churches downtown.

The girl in the U-tube is actually quite a well educated girl. She got stage fright and froze up, and is paying the price. Same thing as Barbra Streisand who refused to perform live for 27 years, and now won't go on stage without a teleprompter. Strange to judge the people of a whole state because one young girl had a panic attack.

SC is the 10th fasting growing state in the nation. People from NJ, NY and FL are coming in fast. Sunny blue skies almost every day!

As far as race relations go, good question. I would assume that racism and racial strife in SC will be more noticeable than in the liberal Pacific Northwest. Remember, this is an ex Jim Crow state and slavery was its backbone since colonial times up until the Civil War. Though from my view, it's mostly the older white generations that don't seem to be as friendly to blacks as the younger ones are. Just beware of people flying the Stars and Bars outside their house or have said bumper sticker on their car

It always seemed to me that there was much more of the nasty type of racism in New England than there was in SC.

I think it is what you make of it yourself. Lots of comment from people outside of SC I notice but what is being stated is their opinion not based on experience. I also notice that politics had to be brought into it. Because you are from a supposedly liberal part of the country it is assumed your liberal but still this is BE after all is said and done. Personally I love it here in SC. I live about 25miles from Columbia in Camden which is also an extremely nice place to live. I hope you like it and best of luck.

I've driven through Camden and been to a party there. Lovely town!

Re: Possibly moving to Columbia SC

As you can see from the number of posts I've made, I'm a newcomer to this type of thing. Based on the hostile responses I've received, I think this will be my last post on BE.

I asked a fairly simple question about race relations in Columbia and have been asked if I'm "afraid of Blacks," and advised to learn how to rap. How strange! Again, I'm new to these forums but I'm certainly not impressed by the way words are twisted and people are baited. Very immature and not for me.

I was hoping someone from The South could walk me through the serious crime-rates in Columbia, which are triple those of Seattle (per 100,000). After receiving hostile responses about my attitude towards blacks, I did some of my own research which proved that homicide victims were 66% black. It seems taboo to discuss race without being baited as if I were a member of the KKK.

I do want to live in the city of Columbia if I get the job, notwithstanding advice to live in the suburbs where it's safe for middle-class whites, according to one person from PA. I grew up in Glasgow, went to uni in Belfast and have lived very happily in the heart of Seattle for the past 14 years. I'm certainly not going to be part of the "white flight" to the suburbs.

Anyway, thanks to the nutters who have convinced me not to ask advice on BE anymore. It really is astonishing how people switch off their common-sense in order to twist words and confute simple questions. Sad.
