Possible move to Virginia

Re: Possible move to Virginia
Try searching on the internet for Bureau of Labor Statistics, they are accurate. Is your significant other an engineering manager? BLS shows 165k for Wash DC area.

It didn't. Messy isn't it. Maybe somebody else would like to post their chart.

Re: Possible move to Virginia
Hi Georgette, i have family who emigrated to VA via my Uncles work. My cousins are now married, one of whom to an American who works in DC and commutes from outside Richmond. Once you find out the location of your husbands office I would be happy to ask them to recommend areas. They live in a community like you described - we are actually staying there this summer, we love Virginia!

If they live anywhere that could even vaguely be describe as "outside Richmond", that is a pretty serious commute! In the morning rush hour, even living north of Richmond, say in/near Ashland, you're looking at a minimum of close to couple of hours actually into DC.

I have to agree. Husband interviewed for a job in Ashland when he first moved to the US and once you hit the "circle" to get around DC and the outer suburbs and find the right road to Ashland, it took us hours to reach Ashland.

I think he works just outside to be fair though I know his commute doe take hours - wouldn't be for me! They seem to have totally embraced the American sense of distance; once they took us for short hike - took us 3 hours in the car to get there ! If I was driving somewhere that was 3 hours away in the UK i'd be wanting to stay overnight

Re: Possible move to Virginia
I would not do any job that involved regular commutes on I-95. The traffic is appallingly unpredictable. I've done do Richmond - DC in just over 90 minutes at "rush hour" and it's taken me nearly 3 hours in the middle of the night and the middle of a Saturday afternoon (non-holiday weekend). It only needs one minor fender bender to throw everything into chaos, and minor fender benders are depressingly frequent.
I have driven that way often enough to agree that I95 traffic is an utter crap-shoot, and that IME, even driving a rental car planning to do DC-Richmond or vice versa, during the rush hour in less than about 2hrs is "a bit optimistic".

Re: Possible move to Virginia
I know of quite a few people who live "just outside Richmond" and commute to the DC area. They live near the junction of the I95 and I295 and have a hellish commute. Most seem to be on some sort of flexible schedule and are on the road for 5am to avoid the worst of the traffic. A number of them also seem to spend 2-3 days working from home with the remainder of the week being at the office in DC.
Would I do it ? Nope... I have to go that way once or twice every couple of months - the majority of the time it's a straight run through, but this doesn't make up for the times when it all goes wrong and your 90 minute drive takes 4-5 hours.

Re: Possible move to Virginia
It's 100 miles from my old address to DC. 90 minutes - or even 100 minutes - for 100 miles is hardly "boy racer" territory on a clear road.

Re: Possible move to Virginia
I could quote similar statistics about the commute that I did for most of the past 16 years, and quoting "on-ramp to off-ramp" times might make for amusing sound bites, but "door to desk" times add a significant number of minutes to the time I took to get to my desk. In fact that is one of the key arguments I used with my wife when we discussed where to live when we moved to NC. I don't want to live next to a major highway (and neither did my wife), so there is going to be a certain number of minutes taken to get from our home to the nearest major highway no matter how long our overall commute, but adding 10, or even 20 miles that we can do at 70 mph +/- makes little difference to our overall commute time but can add a whole lot to our quality of life at home.
