The Pocono Mountains
Following the line from the recent holiday threads.....
Has anyone taken a vacation in the Poconos?
I'm thinking of taking the OH there for a few days and wanted a recommendation on accommodation.
I was thinking of Caesars, anyone been there?
There's no kids with us.

Caesers is alright but a bit overpriced for what it actually is. Very newlywed oriented with games-for-couples-type activites. If you're into that kind of thing.
If you like being in the countryside and hiking, skiing, horse riding etc its got lots of that to offer around Elk and Montage Mountain.
I've seen lots of fantastic wildlife out there, thats probably the best thing.
It won't be too warm up there this time of year though. They might still have snow.

Re: The Pocono Mountains
Personally I wouldn't bother making the trip from Miami to the Poconos.....it's pleasant enough but unless it's the height of Summer there won't be much to do there as there are just small villages and towns which are sort of mothballed right now (unless you're planning to spend most of your time gambling in Caesar's?). I don't think the skiing is very attractive this late in the season, the slopes will be icy.
Someone else posted about the rednecks in East Stroudsburg....we actually spent a 4th July late afternoon & evening there (we stayed at the Holiday Inn) and it was er....a very interesting experience. Living so close to New York most people in our area are slim, fit and reasonably fashionable. It was like a timewarp in E.Stroudsburg....the most popular hairstyle was the mullet(!) for men and women, rather a lot of people were obese and we did honestly wonder if there had been a lot of inbreeding in the local villages - they do have long cold winters in the mountains! Actually they are nothing like the mountains one would find in the Highlands of Scotland or Wales and nothing like the Alps.....most of the mountains are basically big hills at a high elevation, covered in trees. The Delaware Water Gap is pretty (the Delaware river in a gorge which seperates NJ and PA) but probably too cold to go rafting/kayaking this time of year.

I didn't realise Caesar's had a casino at Pocono, I thought this one was just a hotel.
