Phoning Home

What phone service/cards do you use to phone back to England cheaply. I have Skype at home but also need an alternative for when away from the computer.
Thanks

Plenty of threads around on this one - I use: http://marketamerica.tel3.com/ for when I'm out and about.

I like this one because there are no connection fees, but there are probably others just as good or better (I use it so infrequently it's not worth changing).

I use Penny Talk (pennytalk.com). It's set up on my cell phone to recognize my number when I call (no need for a pin#). It does have a connection fee but I have never had a connection problem or quality issues. You can even set it up to be paid via your paypal account. I'm sure there are lower rates out there but for me it is quality service at a fair price.

The only reason I don't like a connection fee is because if you get someone's voicemail and leave a short message it drastically increases your per minute charge.

I'm thinking of using RingBritain.com Apparently there are no fees just the basic rate which is 1.4c per minute for landlines and 14.9c per min for mobiles. Anyone used them?

I have an MCI International calling card that I got from Costco. It's fine to use for my cell phone (don't have a landline).

I just use comcast, because I hardly ever ring blighty...it's only a couple pennies to ring the UK anyway.

I use Lingo which is a VoIP phone (works over internet). it is a competitor of Vonage. For a flat rate of $21.95 per month you get free nationwide and european calls, including UK.

We use yahoo, MSN or skype when online using the webcam or I use vonage on the phone. I haven't paid for many calls long distance on vonage lately except to my sis in Dubai where it is a PITA to call.

And loads of other countries too, including Aus and NZ - a much better deal than Vonage. We've had Lingo for over three years - in the early days it could be a bit laggy, but for as long as I remember now, if you've got a good net connection you can't tell any difference to a normal phone.

For calling from my cellphone, I use a cheap phone card, from www.cheaphonecards.com as has already been mentioned. If you buy anything off that site (inc PAYG topups), type in the promo code "save8" or "cheap" to save some extra cash.

DXB allows skype to skype on the puter, but not via voip phone, so if she's on skype on the puter, you should be all set...

I use www.kallcents.com. There are no contracts, cancellation fees or service charges.
It is 5c/min to Uk.
There is better rates around than this but the cool thing with this service is that you can use it with your Mobile and avoid your Mobile carriers extortionate rates.
