Hi James, I don't know Phoenix myself but I find life in California very different from London - maybe that is what you are looking for.

As you have flexibility, it might be good to come over and rent until you are sure of a place.

Not quite as formal and somewhat more laid back, I would say.

If possible, renting for a while is always a good idea.

But there are some real bargains in the central area at the moment.....and I think they've reached rock bottom.

Indeed there are but it is more of a question of whether they will want to stay here or choose somewhere else.

Buy a house in the central area at the moment and I don't think you'll have any problem walking away in a couple of years the right side up. Alternatively, buy somewhere way out west on the I-10 corridor, way up north on the I-17 corridor or somewhere real weird like Queen Creek and I don't think it'll appreciate in the next couple of decades.

But I'm really not taking the OP seriously until he states how they are actually moving here. Too many of those pie-in-the-sky posts start buy asking about areas to live, schools, etc. Five pages down and we suddenly discover they haven't a hope in hell of moving here. Is the OP one of these? I have no idea!

Great! Which visa? Or are you green cards holders? Or even US citizens

I lived in Tucson for 14 years, and then the Phoenix area for the past 24 years. I currently live in Mesa, near the Gilbert / Chandler borders, and I love the area.

In my opinion, it's not a warm climate, it's HOT (but yes, dry...more tolerable than humid). As for outdoor activities locally, I'd say none during the 9 hot months out of the year, perfect for the remaining 3 cooler months. A few hours drive in several directions takes you to cooler weather, though.
