Question Pet insurance to cover us as soon as we land

We are currently insured for our two dogs with Friends of Animals Insurance in the UK.

We will not be able to continue the cover when we land in the US.

Really want to have cover from when we land especially if they were to get sick on the plane

Can anyone help with this? Hopefully there are others who have shipped their pets and also required they be covered when they landed.

Many thanks in advance

I don't use pet insurance, but this is the company whose brochures I see at my vet:

http://www.petinsurance.com/

The ASPCA also has a pet insurance scheme, but I understand it isn't available in every state, so I suggest you google for it.

We just got a dog and I have spent ages looking at Pet Insurance. I decided to go with Pet Plan. They started in the UK and have gone global. They seem to provide the most comprehensive policy at the best price. You can review the various companies at Pet Insurance Review.

It may not work for coverage the second you arrive as you probably (check with them) have to reside here to take out the policy and then there is a 24 hour waiting period on injuries and 14 days on illness before coverage starts with pre-existing condition clauses.

Like most insurance the policy is based on risk and coverage so if your breed is susceptible to illness or your dog is just getting older then the premium will be higher. You can chose between 50, 100 and 200 dollar deductible which is Per Injury and co-pay from 0% to 20%. if you dog has to be referred to a specialist then you have to pay 30% co-pay regardless. You can choose you coverage limit from $8000, $12000 or $20000 per year which is reset annually and can be spent continuously on the same condition if it is long lasting like diabetes, hip dysplasia and arthritis. They also cover breed based medical traits providing they were not an issue when you took out the policy.

Hope it helps. Choose wisely as there are many policies out there which are not worth the paper they are written on.

Many are of the opinion that pet insurance is not worth it and you're better off just budgeting for pet care.

Thank you very much for the information.

I have always had pet insurance for both dogs so I would think that I just roughly calculated that with having Mouse (6 years) and Badger (2 years) I have paid out around 3k in premiums. And have only ever made a claim for one treatment that was £150. This does not include all vets bills that it was not worth claiming against.

Thanks that is very helpful I think we were with Pet Plan to start with here.

I think we will cover them for the flight and then take it from there.

We will also be living in temporary accommodation for at least a month so would not have an address to file it all with.

Thank you. I did notice that it did vary from state to state will look into it.

Did you decide not to go down the insurance route?

I have always worked on the principle that a young dog will hopefully only need annual checkup/shots, and that consequently the amount of money I won't be spending on insurance premiums will be available when the dog gets old and starts to need more frequent care. Obviously, this is taking a chance that something catastrophic won't happen to a young dog -- but let's face it, gambling is what insurance is all about, whether you take it or you don't!

FYI our premium for a 2 year old Mixed Breed with bronze ($800 per year) coverage, no co-pay and a $50 deductible per injury/illness was $266 per year when paid up front. That, IMO, is not too bad. Especially considering that it will cost me $50 just for a consultation in the event of a problem. Everything else beyond that (within reason) should be covered.

Our rescue dog came to us with urinary problems. So far it has cost us over $500 to investigate and treat. To my knowledge if this had become a problem after we had taken out our policy it would have paid for itself twice over by now.

Considering how much vet bills can cost I think not having insurance is crazy.

Vets costs are very high I agree. Vets are currently being looked into in the UK and hopefully regulated.

So if you pay up front they reduce the amount?

I just went to get a quote from Pet Plan for Mouse and Badger with 50% deductible and 100% Bronze reimbursement and for Mouse the annual is $895.24 and for Badger $776.49. so around $1680 a year around £1080.10 a year currently paying £360 a year for both for the same cover

You might want to give them a call. Sounds extortionate considering one of them is only two (same age as my dog), but then it might be due to breed based problems. They also price based on your zip code as they pay out to you the same as you pay the vet and in some locations (NYC for example) vet bills can be much higher than somewhere else. Many companies will pay what THEY think is the going rate...which could differ greatly from what you have actually had to hand over.

At those prices it clearly isn't very cost effective.

That is your opinion -- I go along with the view expressed in the Consumer Reports link posted by sir_eccles that personal budgeting can work just as well.
