Personal belongings
A little background: I came over on the VWPP in late December of 1997 and my husband
and I got married in the spur of the moment in February of 1998. Due to several
personal circumstances we didn't get to file for AOS until August of 2001. When we
filed our papers at the Omaha office we never got any time estimate about how long
this process would take, though our lawyer kept saying that it would be a good two
years (if not longer) before hearing anything.
I am now trying to figure out the easiest/cheapest way to finally get my personal
belongings shipped from my former homecountry (Denmark) to the US and I have a few
questions.
I was looking at the US costumes site at http://www.customs.gov/travel/moving.htm and
I am a little more than confused. Is it really true that I cannot expect to get
anything shipped over dutyfree until I have the I-551? Right now I only have the EAD
as proof of my status (or lack of it) here in the US.
Also if there's any Danes lurking about in this ng I would very much like to hear
which moving companies you have used? Anyone which should be avoided etc.

Re: Personal belongings
Your attorney should have received a cash register receipt for the forms he submitted for you. This receipt lists the forms filed and the amounts paid. Also you should have in your possession a copy of the appointment letter for the EAD you have. Both these things are proof of your immigration to the US and right to have your belongings shipped here. Have your attorney write you a letter to that effect and that, along with the other two items should do it for you.
You might want to check into using an international shipper who will send things consolidated. This will help cut down the costs of shipping.

We have the receipt and filed in person, with same day EAD so there is no appointment
letter, but I guess a copy of the EAD would do just as well then.
Thanks Rete.

Re: Personal belongings
Rete, Does filing for AOS give you the ability to move things without paying duty?
After all, you don't have immigration status until the AOS is granted.

Re: Personal belongings
When my belongings arrived in the country I only had my alien number...
I used this on all the customs forms and declarations sent to me by the shipping agent....eventhough the forms asked for SSN etc my Alien number and my UK passport sufficed with a note of explanation on the customs forms...
I paid no duty on my personal effects which included a tv and dvd player.

Re: Personal belongings
Yes Michael those items should be sufficient as they give an Alien Registration Number for the inclusion on the shipping/customs declaration. AR# are not given unless INS has provided the alien with some type of permission to reside within the boundaries of the US.
