pensions

hiya, I was just wondering, how do we stand as far as pensions go? with the various places my husband has been at over the last few years he's managed to acrue 3 so far (1 far more contributed to than the other 2) and wondered what would happen to those when we come over? Can they be combined into a single US side fund? Also, would there be any problems the other way around; if I return to the UK would the US pension still be valid? Has anyone got any info on us pensions for brits? Cheers!:D

You may want to search for similar posts to find answers. In the meantime, it would be helpful if you describe exactly what kinds of pensions you're talking about. Private pension schemes are generally not transferable to the US, b/c of the different tax laws, and vice versa. Of course, regardless of where you retire, most private pensions will either pay into an account in that country, from which you can then trsnafer to wherever you are; some will even set up automatic payment to you wgerever you're living in retirement.

"State pensions" are different. See below, for further clues:

I investigated my uk pensions before I left. I was advised to leave them alone i.e don't try and combine them into anything else as this would be very expensive. You can carry on investing in your uk pensions for up to 5 years if resident abroad. Apparently to carry on beyond that is illegal. So I guess one just finishes up with lots of odds and ends of pensions all over the place!
