Can't help you I'm afraid Geoff but welcome back!

Thanks! I spent far too long on the site last time which was why I took a hiatus. I did update my blog last night though. :)

Does he mean a W-2, or do you think he may be confused and is wanting a W-4 to adjust her withholdings?

Quite possibly! Thanks to the others too about W-2 and W-4.

How much do you pay her? (If you don't mind me asking)

We are 2 months away from the arrival of our first child and are looking at options for childcare. Thanks

Well... to be honest it'll vary a lot depending where you are. We had DS (4yo) and DD (1) in Tutor Time (a childcare chain) and that was costing us upwards of 2k a month. Our local TT was appalling though, so check carefully. Our nanny... a bit less, plus she lives-in 4 nights a week and does cooking and cleaning. Well, not much cooking as I prefer to do it.

Surprised you're going the W2 route and not the 1099 contractor, putting all the burden of tax on her shoulders tbh...

But yeah, W2's won't be till next year, so must be a misunderstanding.

^^^ That! It was described to me in simple terms a contractor (1099) dictates hours and work; an employee (W-2) does not. More blurb if you're interested. We like to at least attempt to do things "right", plus there are the deductions somebody mentioned.

Thanks everyone.

Well you probably will be eligible for 50% of his SS when you turn 66. Not a bad return. :)

We had a nanny for 2 years. I used the following service

http://www.4nannytaxes.com

Not sure if this is the same website you are using, but the extra $ to pay them to do all the paperwork IMO was completely worth it.

It is indeed - makes it very simple! Actually - do you have to pay? I know you have to register to get the printable payslips but I don't remember paying anything (or, if I did, maybe it was only a token amount like a tenner or three).

It was a W-4 he meant. A mistype or whatever but he sent back a W-4 for me to... um... take a note of the options and then file I guess!

When I had a nanny, I withheld her Ssn and Medicare but no tax. I still had to do a w2 and a schedule h, plus unemployment insurance tax.

Yes, I just filed it, you will need to know the Ssn of the nanny when you do the w2 and possible when you report tax witholding and unemployment tax in your state (I did in Ohio quarterly).
