Paying duty on alcohol when moving?

Hi All,

Just wondering if any one knows how I can work out how much duty I'll have to pay if I want to bring alcohol into the country when we move house?

I've got an exemption permit from Washington state liquor control board to allow us to bring 11 bottles of wine/ champagne with us (in our suitcases, rather than with the rest of our household goods), but I'm assuming that we'll still have to pay duty when we clear customs.

The CBP website (which makes my head hurt!) seems to suggest 3% is payable on all amounts over 1 litre, but how will they determine the cost of the wine we're bringing in?

Has anyone else done this? The best thread I've been able to find is from about 4 years ago and seems to suggest $3.50 per bottle......

Thanks in advance for your help!

You will also need to know the $ amount the goods are worth for the declaration.

The current rates are here:
http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm
Chapter 22 ,page 6 is wine
Ultimately CBP let you know how much it's going to cost.

That's really helpful - thanks! Here's hoping that the CBP officer isn't a closet wine expert and challenges my valuation! ;)
