I was quite surprised how quick it was as I didn't fill in some of my stuff and subitted it anyway....I was born abroad and wasn't going to send in my original British Consultate birth certificate and figured if they really needed it they could ask for it LOL! But it was a renewal anyway so it's not like it was a new request. |
Re: Passport Delays
:( I wonder why it is taking them so long to process the payment....
|
Re: Passport Delays
Got my phone call from UPS. Haven't taken the money out of my account though
|
Re: Passport Delays
Does anyone know the current processing time?
The Embassy site says ten working days. Any view on whether this is correct? |
Re: Passport Delays
The 10 days banner on the website is still a work of fiction.
I sent mine by Fedex on Fri 30 Oct, was received by them on Monday 2 Nov, account was debited on 6 Nov and I've heard nothing since. I was starting to think UPS had lost it - but after reading these threads I'm inclined to blame the Passport Office ! |
Re: Passport Delays
I have had practically the same dates as you, and they are still processing mine as well.

I was thinking people could post their time frames on passport delays here. Currently the British Embassy in Washington is experiencing technical difficulties that make British passport changes horrendously slow.
If you've recently sent off your passport and have received it back, can you please post when you sent it, the date they took the payment, and when you received the passport. |

Dean Yes Dean, I am. I figured since I actually have a Certificate of Registration, that it would go faster. My friend got her passport without one, but by providing everything they would need to claim that she is indeed a citizen by decent. |

Re: Passport Delays
I finally had contact from Washington. I called Careline again and they asked someone to contact me. The Passport Office sent me an e-mail that basically stated that since I was a first time applicant, that it can take from 4-8 weeks to process. Dean had mentioned this, and now the Passport Office is confirming this. This is great news as all I wanted was someone there to just tell me that the processing was still continuing and there were no issues.

Re: Passport Delays
I can't comment on applying for a passport by mail, the only time I have done that was for my first passport when living in the UK and applying for it by mail from Liverpool.
From my experience of British Embassies and Consulates overseas however I have never had to wait more than 3 days for a new passport, but have always applied for a new one in person, in a few different countries (I am now on m 10th passport in 15 years! Long story). I once got a temporary, 1 year passport, at the British Consulate in Miami a few years ago whilst travelling from Seattle to Curacao via Miami. An hour after landing in Miami I realised that I had left my passport on the plane. "Too late" I was told, the plane was heading back to Seattle... The wife was less than impressed:thumbdown:! After an hour of looking at our options we jumped in a taxi with our carry on luggage and headed to the British Consulate. An hour after arriving there I had a fresh passport, valid for a year, in my hands. A few hundred dollars lighter and 5 hours later we landed in Curacao. (2 days later my original passport was sent to me in Curacao from the airline.). From my experience I would always recommend you apply in person for a new passport if you can, even if it costs time and money to get to a British Consulate/Embassy. As an overseas Brit this is probably the most important document you will have/need. |

Dean Mine was a basic renewal. It's been in now for over four weeks. The application was received on 2nd Nov and the fee was debited from my account back on 6th November. Haven't heard anything since. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's not gone missing ! |
Re: Passport Delays
If you call the Careline, they can confirm your application is being processed.

Re: Passport Delays
I wish I had seen this thread before mailing my passport in to the DC Embassy and stupidly trusting their "10 day" turn around time. Luckily I'm in no hurry to get the passport back.
It looks like the "little piece of Britain" that is over here is just as lazy and incompetent as the bigger piece we left behind. |

Re: Passport Delays
It's only 45 minutes down the road for me and I mailed it ... Would probably have it by now if I had gone down there in the very first case...
|
Re: Passport Delays
Apparently they do not have parking near the Embassy, so it might have been a bit of a walk! I would have handed it in person had I lived so close!
|
Re: Passport Delays
The nearest metro station is more than a mile away too...

Re: Passport Delays
Just called Careline and apparently my passport was printed on Friday so should be with me any day now  Just in time for leaving on the 22nd :D So to summarize passport application returned to me for corrections Nov 9th. Returned to the passport office on the same day. Passport printed December 4th.

Re: Passport Delays
Great news! Am still waiting myself.
|
Re: Passport Delays
And it arrived at 9:30 this morning. No phone call this time though

Re: Passport Delays
The first time they had problems with the payment so they sent it back to me and asked for a money order. I sent that to them on the 9th November and got my new passport back yesterday 8th December. Have you tried calling Careline?
|
Re: Passport Delays
After reading through the various posts, I'm in two minds about calling them. I can't afford to spend $100+ if I don't get sone worthwhile information. Did you call them? How was your experience?
|
Re: Passport Delays
I have called a few times and it never lasts more than 6 mins. I call the UK number rather than the 900 number. You are connected to an agent almost immediately, and it is worth it if you have concerns or questions. They will ask you for your credit card number immediately, and then they will answer any questions about your passport application status.
|
Re: Passport Delays
Costs about $5-6 a call. Like Wooglin said they answer quickly and the calls only take 5-6 minutes.

Umm... no, it isn't. There isn't a UK Embassy for North America. The UK Embassy for the US is in Washington DC. The UK Embassy for Canada is in Ottawa. The UK Embassy for Mexico is in Mexico City.

Re: Passport Delays
And for Canada, it is not called the British Embassy, but rather, the British High Commission. Guess it must be a Commonwealth thing.

My experience would have been a very nervous one had I not contacted Dean or called careline. I strongly suggest that anyone who has been waiting for 10 business days or more to contact either for help. They were very timely, polite, and sorted out my problem with a great degree of professionalism. Thank you! James |
Re: Passport Delays
Your welcome

Re: Passport Delays
I am getting so angry. I called Careline and apparently they have not even looked at the application yet. Apparently there are 4 stages or so that the Passport goes through and mine is apparently "frozen" or stuck at stage one. I don't mind if the application is at least moving along, but it looks like it has not even been touched. Good god this is so frustrating. I can't even talk to an official in Washington. They have put another escalation through to speed things up, and I am expecting a call or e-mail from them shortly...I hope.
