When we moved here we brought our TV, VCR and collection of videos over and the shippers gave us 2 transformers free. The VCR broke so when my Mum came over she bought a VCR for 30 quid at Asda and brought it over for us along with Peter Kay videos and The Office. Family and friends in England tape programmes for us and then just put them in the post.

Not too bothered - except I have a Barenaked Ladies DVD I can't play on the US DVD players. Where can you buy them, and roughly for how much? |

Where can you buy them, and roughly for how much? Its been awhile since I searched for them but when I did this last year, you could get the Philips 724 which did an okay job. Its now available on overstock.com for $60. There may be better models around now. Look at www.dvdoverseas.com if you want to pay more |
I got a Cyberhome 300 multi region dvd from radio shack for $30. And it's pretty good, too

Does the Cyberhome 300 play UK DVDs on a UK TV?
Wehave a UK TV and VCR in the spare room so I thought I would buy one. One bloke in Bestbuy told me it would only play US DVDs on US TVs but another one told me it was multi-regional but didn't know whether it would work on the UK TV. So I came out of the store with no DVD and none the wiser. |

I am no expert but I think multi-regional means it will play DVDs from all over the world. Whereas the usual ones you buy here will only play US and Canadian DVDs.

There's two barriers to playing DVDs from anywhere, and they are entirely seperate from each other. One is the Region Code (1 is US and Canada, 2 is Europe and Japan, etc) and the other is the TV system (PAL or NTSC).
To watch discs from anywhere, the player has to support NTSC *AND* PAL video (should be most) as well as being unlocked for whatever region the disc you want to play is. In America, most TVs probably won't play back the PAL video that's on European Region 2 discs, even if the DVD player wants to play them (I think most LCD TVs are much the same all over the world and as such will, however). So if you get a black and white picture from your multi region player, you'll need to buy a standards converter to plug in between the DVD player and TV (or just watch the disc on a computer). As for PAL VCRs, I haven't ever used this company but have heard good things. World Gift Center will probably have something to your liking: http://www.220giftcenter.com/vcr.htm One bloke in Bestbuy told me it would only play US DVDs on US TVs but another one told me it was multi-regional but didn't know whether it would work on the UK TV. |
I have a UK Samsung 709 DVD player that can convert NTSC to PAL and a US Philips 726 player that can convert PAL to NTSC, both are multi region.
The Philips one was about $50 from Best Buy. |
http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/ use this link!! it gives you the info to make most dvd players multi-region for free!!! good luck

To play PAL and NTSC dvd or video tapes your tv will need a composite input and the dvd/vcr player will need composite out. The RF signal will not work.
Other than that, if you have a DVD burner it is a simple process to rip a dvd and make it region free and then burn back to dvd. Also with a hardware capture card (hauppauge 250) you could record all your video tapes to mpeg2 format (dvd format) and then convert onto dvd via an app like Ifo Edit Patrick |

We have a PAL vcr here. Its great except for one problem. We bought a CMD-850 digital converter system for $200 and still the Video playback (PAL Videos) is in Black and white. Is it because i need a PAL TV? If so, if anyone has a pal tv in great working order out there who would be willing to swop for this converter just let me know. Thanks.
BTW i am not a newbie here just forgot my login and password LOL so i had to re-register! |
