Default Owing money in the UK.

I've had a letter at home from the Department of Work and Pensions saying that I owe money to the social fund.

Can anyone out here shed some light on why I owe for it and what its going towards? I'm hoping I don't have to pay it due to living in the US now. Any help is welcome. I've tried Google but it didn't help out

Having never seen the letter, how can anyone here possibly tell you why you owe it or where the money goes! If the letter doesn't say, why not simply ask them?

The social fund is the branch of the dole that arranges loans to benefit claimants. So did you take out a loan while claiming benefit in the UK at any time?

MaterialController could clearly do it. Why reply if you can't offer any help?

Thanks for your help, it makes perfect sense now. I took out a hardship loan some years ago and forgot all about it.

Fair enough. Why didn't you just Google "social fund"? You'd have gotten the information without having to ask here first... and then suffer responses like mine! It's called doing your own research... first!

You're right, maybe I should have put in the OP that I'd tried Google but it didn't help.
