I think British banks charge customers too for bounced checks if I'm not mistaken.

However, the prominence of signage about bounced checks charges in the US leads me to believe that bounced checks is far more commonplace than in the UK...

I think bounced checks are far more commonplace here in the US NC, you're right. I do know that we rarely wrote checks in the UK (everything was covered by DD or we used our card) I certainly liked that system better. And yes I agree the US is a bit backwards in banking....but things are starting to come around. I know my husband thought it was a bit archaic that his pay couldn't just go directly into the bank, but it does now. We have a few bills taken out of our account, but for the most part I pay just about everything online. We have a credit union (much better than a bank in my opinion) so our checks don't cost a lot anyway.

Checks and cheques should both go: it's 2005 folks! Find it funny when old codgers say they wouldn't ever buy anything on the Internet because it's unsafe. They then proceed to write out a check at the grocery store with their name, address, bank account details, home address, telephone number and often even their SSN printed on it, and then hand it to a spotty associate who earns $6/hr.

So, Norm, are you gonna look at Bill Pay?

Biggest rip-off going. PMI is to cover the insurance firm, not to cover you. Hopefully you haven't got a mortgage yet because you should never have to pay PMI - you need a different broker (or whoever you are dealing with) if they can't fix this for you. More typical would be to have an 80% mortgage, 10-17% second mortgage, and 3-10% down. No PMI.

Yeah, it's funny - UK banks always tell you never to keep your cheque book and address in the same place.

We have the NRA membership already, thanks. I'm still waiting to hear from any BE member who can give me recommendations for ordering checks still...

... which is why when I ordered the checks, I only requested mine and my spouse's firstnames intials appear alongside our lastname.

Therefore, anyone who knicks our blank checks would have to know one of the firstnames in order to forge the signature, making it more challenging...

I certainly didn't include any SSN in the check design either. Who in the world would do that nowadays, anyway?
