Default Opting out and thinking about consulting

I've just been laid off and am thinking of getting out of full time corporate America all together.

One route I am considering is consultancy and I've been approached by a consulting firm that specialises in my particular field. I'm wondering what the pros, cons and pitfalls are with this kind of employment? Anyone done it successfully or unsuccessfully?

yeah, I know, I know most people who get laid off start thinking about the consulting route...but I'm really curious and looking for the flexibility it could bring.

Any advice appreciated on this one. Please try to keep horror stories to a minimum!

Would you be working for a consulting firm or would you be self employed? I can give you a whole bunch of info if you are going to be self employed

well to start with I'd rather go with a consultancy firm, just to get me on my feet and networked with some credibility....still curious about the T&Cs involved with that option.

thanks!
