Default Optician's

Anyone have a recommendation for a good optician? which ones should I avoid? Does anyone know approx how much a eye test will cost? I haven't had my eyes tested since I came here and they need doing if it is a lot more expensive I will just wait and get them done in the UK in Oct.

If you're coming here in October then best get them checked while you're here. They charge what they like in the USA for eye tests, and as for the glasses..............

I needed to get new glasses for reading a couple of weeks ago, and it prompted me to joinn this scheme someone recommended... www.careington.com

For $12 a month you get great discounts on optical and dental treatment. Long story short, I wound up (with the membership card) getting lenses for $25 and frames for $30 at Target Optical. I didn't get an eye test as I had my prescription written out before I left, but I think it was around $25 with this... seems pretty good discounts on dental treatment too as long as y ou use someone on their plan list, but all the ones people recommended around here were on it.

I went to Walmart. Eye test was $45 dollars Lenses start at $60 and go up to $125 for regular and I believe bifocals(sp) are about $200 for their most expensive. Frames start at $35 dollars. I got a new pair just over a month ago as did my wife. Mine were around $220 including the eye test and my wifes were a few dollars under $300 once again including the eye test.

I just wanted to add that if you have a high prescription, it may be cheaper to buy glasses in the States. I can't get a pair of glasses in the UK for under £300, and I'm always exempt from the special deals (buy-one-get-one-free) that are offered.

The eye exams and contact lenses do seem to be cheaper in the UK, although getting lenses over the internet can sometimes give quite big savings in both countries.
