Online tax return (HMRC) and self assessment SW

Before leaving UK I registered with HRMC for online tax return and got login and password.
Now I try to fill out the form online and the website states that it is only allowed for UK residents, whereas non UK residents should use a commercial software for that: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/efiling/sa_efiling/soft_dev.htm

There are dozens of software providers, I need an advice which one works well for individuals. I let my property in the UK - that's only the income that I need to file for now.

Here are the key points that I need to consider choosing the software:

1)Reliability and simplicity in use.
2)Price....

As I understand I will be purchasing a new version every tax year.... Just want to make sure my wife and I can use one license.

Any good experience? Thanks!!!

Just fill in the paper form, its not difficult, and then send it off to HMRC.

... Which reminds me I need to get on with doing that.

How do you evidence that you've sent it? The docs can be lost by the post offfice and I don't want to pay for FedEx.

Hit the international tab.

You can still use the HMRC online service from the US to check the status of your return so you will know when it is in the system.
From experience though, it can take 2 or 3 weeks from when the return is received until your account is updated.

I've always used USPS without issue, obtained a mailing receipt, but never had an issue so far with tax returns. Now sending Xmas presents I had no end of issues, but tax returns, all was good.

My husband had to do the same because he is also a non resident landlord. Because he doesn't really make much money on the house HMRC only required us to do two years of UK tax returns. We used taxcalc.

www.taxcalc.com.
It was pretty easy.

ive used www.sa2000.co.uk on two different tax years. you can download the spreadsheet for free and play about with it to see if its suits and then once you are happy you have it completed - you pay about ten quid to get a code that allows you to submit it.

it even gives a confirmation that its submitted. i had no issues using it and will likely use it again this year. do test it out early though - as you have to input all the HMRC access stuff into it so it can do it on your behalf and THAT took a while to do properly the first time. (we also have a let property in the uk)
