Thumbs up One good thing about education here...

With all the criticism of the education system here, I thought I would tell all about one thing (albeit small) which I think is good.
My daughter is in 3rd grade and brings home 2 sheets of maths homework everyday. I never had any homework until I started high school. One of these sheets is a list of 30 sums, all using the number factors 0 to 20, and she has to do as many as she can in 1 minute. At the beginning of the year she averaged 12 correct sums. Now she is averaging 18 correct sums and in all likelyhood will be able to do them all by the end of the year. As I watch her, I can see she knows a lot of them automatically now. I think this is an excellent teaching technique to get those basic sums in her head as second nature, without having to think of the answer first, something which I still have to do to this day.

beats trying to learn your times table and having to stand up in class and read it out loud back to everyone....getting chalk thrown at you if you couldn't remember the bloody thing!

You got off easy - we had a blackboard eraser thrower. Ah, the good old days.

Oh god the dreaded times tables........ did anyone ever learn ALL of them off by heart. I'm trying to teach my son and I have to say I HATE it and am trying to cover up, through grited teeth, my frustration in an attempt not to make it an issue for him too...

There's a dvd set of "Schoolhouse Rock" you can get that has, among other things, groovy cartoon songs that go through the multiplication tables. Our girls find it fun to watch and they almost learn by accident. Might be worth looking into. Helps a lot with the teeth grinding thing!
