old immigration documents - what do I need to keep
Hi All
Just decided to have a spring clean and was clearing out my fire safe and have a huge pile of documents going back to 2001 - 5 H1-B's, Advanced paroles and other stuff and was now wondering if I need to keep anything as I have a green card (nearly 2 years). Thanks Brendan |

I would keep everything.
When I did my greencard application a few months ago the attorneys got miffed because I didn't have my I-20 from when I went to college here 12 years ago. |

Until you get US citizenship, keep it all.

Then, after you become a USC, keep just the really important documents, any originals from USCIS, photocopies of your previous green cards, but not necessarily all the photocopies of the backup evidence you sent along with various applications. Rene |

I'm in favor of keeping the stuff as long as it doesn't take up too much space. It's quite an archive of family history information that future generations might find quite interesting.

You should keep everything. For example, if you ever need to prove you have abandoned your tax residence or domicile in the United Kingdom, documents that show exactly when you came to the United States would be helpful.
