Re: OK where to start.....

he has a US bank account. Not sure about the ins and outs of his SSN, I am guessing as he is employed by a contractor for the US government he would have some sort of SSN. Everything he has is on the base where he works, he only was able to get the work he does based on a credit check, if he failed that then we would not be discussing it.

This. Do not underestimate the problems you may face without a credit history. It pops up in all sorts of odd places, such as cell phone contracts. Some landlords won't rent to you either without a credit history, or might ask for several months rent up front.

If your husband is working overseas and you are leaving all your friends and family behind, you might find the lack of a support network challenging. Juggling children and their various activities and commitments is going to be a full time job.

it is a full time job here, no friends or family to rely on a regular basis at all, only in emergencies. the company will pay for our accommodation (he has been told this) for 6 months, so no need for a deposit from us, I will get a pre pay cell phone these exist almost everywhere. I don't even have a contract phone here so wouldn't start there as hardly make any calls.

I do not underestimate my abilities at making sure that all commitments are met, I don't care for my needs, all for my children.

You not specify what type of special immigrant visa your husband will be obtaining. The most common these days are for religious workers. But there are other categories related to having worked for the US Government or international organizations.

I often stop when I see the word "guaranteed." From past experience and current observation, many special immigrant categories are not all that easy.

Good luck.

I don't want to go into his work as that is his business. An SIV is for afghans and iraqi's who have aided the US government for at least a year come sept 2015, they have 4000 green cards available for such individuals, and has been informed that if he faces any issues his work will assist in obtaining the green card. Hopefully we will not face a too bigger hurdle and it will all work out fine. If not we will have to have a plan B in place somewhere in the EU.

Re: OK where to start.....

can't get a place big enough for our budget here, living costs are getting ridiculous, money lost in conversions from bank account, weather here rather depressing most of the year, need a change of scenery and a few more other little reasons

Unless he already has a credit history, you'll be up for rubbish rates.

It's one of those things where you need to work on building credit history from day one.

It affects all aspects of your life, not just the rates you get for utilities and insurance, but also in some instances, potential to get a job.

Expect to put a deposit down on all the utilities because of a lack of history, have horridly expensive car insurance down to no history, or driving history.

I believe a lot in fate, my husband working away was not the plan, but the only option for us right now, has been on and off for 10 years, not ideal never ideal, but needs must, which is why the states is best, plus the amount of house you can get for your money it feels like a no brainer to me. I live in a rather affluent area here, and there is no way we could afford a 4 bed plus house here which are even few and far between, ridiculous prices, this is the biggest reason for our move or we would have to move to an area I would know I wouldn't be happy here iykwim
