This is the correct forum. Lots of Brits have emigrated to Texas. Hopefully, some will know of Odessa.

Only know it as a place we have either ridden/driven through on our road trips through west Texas.
If I recall it is not far ( in Texas miles) from Fort Stockton.
I actually love the West Texas area. Where are you working?

I visited Odessa lots of times when I was working in Houston. Short plane ride from Houston to the Odessa-Midland airport which is just off I20 bang in-between the 2 towns. Most of the folks I worked with in Odessa lived in Midland, a drive of 30 - 45 minutes. It is in the middle of the desert, very interesting terrain and a long drive from anywhere but easy access to the airport.

The classic movie “The Last Picture Show” starring a very young Cybill Shepherd and Jeff Bridges is set near there. In one scene you can see a pickup truck with the logo Odessa Oil or something like that.

What is the job? My son worked in the oil industry up there a few years back. HIs ex-wife would never move there as it was too isolated and too far from Burnet (in the hill country near Austin) . Also it is very expensive. The air is rank with the fumes from gas drilling.

I have never been to West Texas, but my understanding is that all the towns in the Permian have the problems that come with being boom towns - high cost of living, especially housing, infrastructure, especially roads, struggling to cope, a lack of qualified teachers and other issues. The culture is very small town Texas - sports centre on high school football.

If the pay is incredibly good and you don't have children, I would consider it, but do your research first. I would not go there myself.

speech language pathology assistant in schools. I have tried to get work in schools in Arizona but to no avail. I plan to work in Odessa for the school year and then look at other states.

Good for you, go with an open mind. There is some amazing sites to see in West Texas. Make sure you visit Big Bend, Marfa, Alpine and my favorite Terlingua. It can look pretty desolate in places but then you will come across some interesting and beautiful sites. Even if you only stay a year it will be an eye opening experience.

Texas is underrated. I would probably stay there rather than go to Arizona unless there is a huge difference in salary scale for your position.

+1

All good spots to visits. I would also add Palo Duro Canyon, the 2nd largest canyon in the USA. It is a State Park and absolutely stunning. You can drive down and through it with lots of spots to stop and plenty of trails to walk. We have been there a couple of times. It is a 4 hour drive north of Odessa and quite close to Amarillo which is where we stayed last time we visited it.

Thank you for all your input. I will actually be earning more than I do in Arizona. I can finally go back to being a W2 instead of 1099. I will also have benefits which I've not hard for past 18 months. I just am tired of Arizona. No ties here anymore.

The movie "Friday Night Lights" (based on the book of the same name, and followed by a TV series of the same name) chronicles Odessa Permian High School football, which is a major power in high school football. Their stadium holds over 19,000 people for basically U18s.

Odessa seems to have the headlines, all over the news.
