Yes. The US Supreme Justices are not voted onto the bench. They are nominated by the President and then go before Congress for a hearing to determine their fitness.

Remember when the Republican Senate refused to confirm Zoe Baird cos she hadn't paid SS taxes on a nanny for her kid?
These days the nominees can be complicit in criminal behaviour and the Republicans whinge if the Democrats make a fuss.

I think this must be a very important issue 'cos US husband has been wandering around grumbling about it all morning . I have only a sketchy idea about the mechanics of US politics myself, but anything which is likely to push things further to the right is very scary!
