Default Obtaining a social security number

Just a quick simple question:

How long does it take to get a SS number issued?
Is it a case of turning up, filling out some forms etc and then being issued with a number there and then? I imagine it will take a bit longer to get the actual card but I need the number almost immediately after I land in the US because I need it to apply for my ABC License which is all part of the process needed to close escrow.

Thanks

You fill in your SS5 form and take it to your local SS office
with all your other info ..passport visa etc
queue for hours ...then a surly person will grunt and groan
then 10 day later it may arrive in the mail ..

Don't bother applying until you have been in the country ..
for around 10 days... time is needed to get your
name in the system

SSA will need to verify your immigration status before issuing the number (if you're eligible for one). You are a bit at the mercy of whomever does the data entry from your flight if you're an immigrant. I have a feeling there is less involved for certain of the non-immigrant entries.

Suggest you do a search for posts from mdyoung (now ex member) with 'SSA' and/or 'POMS' in the search. He may not address your specific visa category, but will give you some good tips.

yes leave it 10 days to apply as otherwise your form will just sit in the office until someone remembers to try to check it.

then once your have filled it all out and got your receipt you can return the following day and they may print off a piece of paper with the number on - (not all offices do this apparently). the card will arrive some time after between 2 and 12 weeks !).

You apply when you get here - wait 10 days, go to your local SS office (enjoy) and wait

about 6 weeks for us so far

Relevant thing #1 is an appropriate visa. What visa do you have?

I waited 2 weeks as told at the airport, got to the SS office and they gave me a number straight away, the card arrived on the post a few days later..

But you don't have a visa, do you? So a Social Security number is the least of your worries. D'oh!

WHen I went to SSA to hand in my application form, the lady told me the numbers are assigned overnight, so I was able to go back the next day and get a printout of my number. The card then arrived within a week in the mail. My only problem was that I wasn't allowed to have an apostrophe in my last name!

You can't get a Social Security number when you are here as a visitor.

DH waited less than 10 min. at our local office. He went day after he got his EAD (different situation than OP) but had it in less than 10 days. I had to wait longer (15 min) when I did a name change and got mine in 5 days.
