DMV Policy Drives Away Customers by Dan Mangan

The DMV has begun demanding that people present a Social Security Card to do basic transactions -- but forgot to tell anyone first.

Before Friday, DMV accepted SS cards as one form of ID that could be combined with others to satisfy the agency's requirement for proof of an applicant's name.

Now, all people must present their card to the agency, unless the person already has a NY photo license or permit.

People who are not eligible to get a SS card must present a letter from the federal Social Security Administration stating that fact, and an Immigrtion and Naturalization Service card.

DMV spokesman Joseph Picchi said the new regulations are "part of the new, more stringent reqjuirements" the agency has adopted since Sept. 11

"We will want to make sure people who say they are a
certain person are that person," Picchi said

Wonder what INS card they are talking about? EAD or Green Card? What about K-1 visa holders?
