Default NY bans Trans fats in Restaurants

Well I accidentally closed the tab to the story and can't be arsed to find it again...but basically, NY has banned trans fats from being used in public eateries, which I think is a good thing, but had mixed reactions. They also want to make restaurants show nutritional info with the food, but don't know if that will work.

The plans for the trans fat ban is in the pipeline for Mass and I think they said DC...

So what are your thoughts about it?

Personally I think they should try to reduce the amount of High Fructose Corn Syrup, but it's a start...so shouldn't the state be messing with this kind of thing?

I think a ban is great! They add nothing to food. Same with HFCS. I'm an avid label reader and will never buy anything with HFCS in it.

HFCS actually does a lot of good stuff to food, just not your body.

That's funny... I survive perfectly well without that.

Here's a link to one of the trans fat stories.

HFCS makes drinks sweeter, bread fluffier, muffins last longer... etc... etc.. i.e. all the things food manufacturers want.

Oh I know what it's used for. It's revolting stuff. I don't want fluffy bread, I want tasty & healthy bread. And I like my lemonade as tart as I can get it.

Trans fat should be banned nationally, It's SH IT. I saw this on a PBS show about obesity, If you leave a lump of trans fat under atmospheric conditions it doesn't break down at all, even after many years! Fast food chains only use it too keep costs down for oils etc. Gotta love some of the TV advertising in America, one ad selling you some food which is less nutritional than the cardboard box it came in, followed by advertising for a drug "do you have high cholesterol and high blood pressure?"

While I agree that it is unhealthy, I'm damn tired of Big Brother telling me what I can do, what I can see, what I can eat and what I can smoke.

I don't need a Big Brother or another mother in my life. I'm an adult and all they should be responsible for is giving me the data on the product. It is up to me, and me alone, make up my mind as to how I want to proceed from there.

They banned smoking yet it is legal to buy them. The State and Federal Governments make a mint on the sale of them from source to consumption. They tell me to buy small cars for energy efficiency and then tax the sh*t out of the gas to make me need to buy a smaller car if I want to survive economically. Enough already. Get the F**k out of my life.

I understand what you're saying, personally I think the smoking ban has gone way too far and people should be able to make their own choices. I'd be happy to make my choices in restaurants if on the menu they stated that they were using hydrogenated oils. At least, people would have the option of making an informed choice.
However on the other hand, we are dealing with a massive obesity/diabetes/heart disease epidemic here, children have a lower life expectancy than their parents...so I do think something needs to be done and drastic action like this will probably have the most impact. Children don't give a shit what they're shoving into their mouths and parents don't always make educated choices for their kids....if burgers were all fried in lard it'd be better for you than this chemically enhanced crap.
It's just a case of picking your battles I suppose. I think people should be allowed to smoke but I wouldn't mind if there was a national ban on hydro oils and a total junk food ban in school cafeterias.

So you'd agree to them making restaurants provide nutritional information on the grub they serve then?

I should be President. A few years ago I was telling my friends that invading Iraq would lead to civil war and was based on faulty intelligence...

...and that hydrogenated vegetable oil or trans fats are really bad for you.

This is not Big Brother, most people have no idea what is in their food if they knew it caused heart disease or even cancer they may not choose it, can't see how that is going too far.
