Sorry, I think it's silly to think people would register them. There's only a fine if you're caught, and police can't run around randomly searching houses.
Would the illegal gun market dry up? Maybe some day I suppose. But I think it would be a day way way way off in the future.

2) The Second Amendment does not guarantee the right to cheap guns and ammunition. You bet we could encode bullets. The old joke about bullets being expensive enough to warrant consideration before popping a cap into someone's ass should become true.

1) Gun registered at point of first purchase. Manufacturer keeps ballistic fingerprint, submits copy of same to LEO in jurisdiction of first sale.

And I don't think the nation will go for horridly expensive ammo.
I'm just not that terribly excited by the "gun problem" I guess - seems overkill to me.
