They make a slice of that few percent that the issuing agency charge the retailer for every transaction, so yeah, they make money even if you do pay off the bill every month.

Store credit cards are usually really easy to get, for anyone starting out. Target, especially and it's quite a good one if you shop there frequently. Amazon, is another easy one to get, which usually give a decent limit and has cash back type incentives even if not shopping with them, but obviously, not as good.
