Is this normal, or have I just landed a crap job?

I'm self employed. Being someone from a trade union background I think if/when I work for a US employer I could find myself in hot water with the shocking lack of employee benefits on offer here. I would hardly ever be able to visit my family back in the UK.

We need some sort of Ryanair equivalent which specializes in transatlantic flights. I don't mind having to pay extra for drinks or meals, I don't even mind being treated like cattle. I just want to get there for a reasonable price.

A valid point, though I'd probably prefer the Southwest model over the Ryanair one.

I just booked flights back to Blighty for April. United were more expensive than BA. It's such a shame United's mileage program is still better than BA's (BA's fees are stupidly high).

Wasn't there something in the news just last week about a cheapo transatlantic starting up? Cant remember where I read it now, and cant find it. I remember reading the article, finding that it was going to be lmited to London- NY, plus another US city, and promptly forgot about it as no-where near Houston..

What's the point in saving the planet when in fifteen years it's going to be full of disgruntled would-be air travellers who are just a gnat's more browned off than a T-Rex with an itchy scrotum ... ?

The company I'm at has offices in the US, UK, India, France and Spain (also on the NYSE). Is there something to be said for companies trying to even the playing field? Presumably you wouldn't want work colleagues getting the hump because the Paris office gets twice as much holiday as the Bangalore one.
Like others have said, there is an expectation that we will take all our vacation time, they actively encourage it. Who am I to argue?

Iceland Air also has pretty reasonable fares across the Atlantic if you don't mind stopping in Reykjavik.
But yes, in general the fares to Europe seem to be highway robbery atm. I get to go to Switzerland next week and it took me a while to find a halfway reasonably priced flight that didn't require five stops across the US.

Just recalling that I used to work for an employer in the US who used to get upset when people would phone me at lunch break from abroad, never really understood why, although he was a major a-hole.
Anyway my experience is that when Americans say "it's a great place to work" that usually means they get a fair bit of paid holiday, which seems to imply that actually it's an okay place to work because you're not there as often.
