no power for 4 nights in freezing weather in Seattle area
Power went out here on Thurs night for about 1 million people affected, including me. (Supposed to be big storm but wasn't just feel the power lines aren't as well built etc as UK) Just got power back 1 hr ago. Hope Kate, Amerlisa, Desi are OK and don't know if they were affected.
I didn't have a torch or radio (but apparently most were well prepared cause of expecting the big earthquake to happen, but not me )
I at least had hot water loads didn't. But being unAmercian and stupid we also didn't have a barbecue or any means of heating hot water for drinks, let alone food.
So we took to driving around in the car all day for 3 days stopping at any place that did have power.
I know in a very small way how the New Orleans people felt with the govt as I can't believe how stupid our local govt were either. On the car radio the only official govt people that bothered to give advice all gave web addresses out for people to get information :scared: No phone numbers etc (well we had broadband which of course was down and our mobile's weren't working due to no power for signal towers either) Do these stupid people not realise there was no way to get onto the internet!!!!!
Well I feel like kissing the lights and am once again thankful of electricity and can't believe how everything is dependent on it. (Driving was scary sometimes as no street lights or street signals just suicidal stupid drivers!)
I am thawing as I write and am so glad that experience is behind me and served me a kick in the butt to get alternative means of cooking and a disaster kit.
I can only urge you to do the same.

Wondered what had happened to you...sorry to hear about the freaky weather there.
Lisa and Desi have been posting over the weekend...so they must be OK.
Our power was out for a couple of days earlier in the year. We have a gas fire and a small camping style, single burner thingy...for brewing a cuppa. Always keep candles and torches at hand 'cos the power is always going off...year round.

Glad to hear the others weren't affected or are OK. When the camping stores get the stoves back in I'm buying some Jerseygirl! Knew you were out but not for a couple of days!
Were used to having a lot of brownout in VA but I think our longest was only 9hrs.
It was just so cold the last couple of nights, the house was freezing (just lucky no burst pipes).
Thanks for the well wishes.
Haven't missed anything major for 4 days here have I?

Was wondering what happened to you! We lost our electricity on Thursday evening, but thankfully had it restored Friday around 9pm. After a very cold 24 hours! :scared: Our phone and internet was restored on Saturday evening. Its amazing what you take for granted, isn't it? We luckily have a propane bbq that has a burner on the side. We're going to get an emergency kit together as well and my husband said last night that he's going to be buying a generator.

I'm so glad you're ok, it certainly does make you think about emergency preparedness (or lack of it). I haven't seen Kate around.

apart from candles here, and the mini camping bbq thingy, we aren't that prepared....got some snacks and blankets in the car, with torch...don't remember if we have a first aid box any more tho...and don't have water or kitty litter/sand, but probably should, that and a camping shovel...but oh well...we're in the city now, so less likely to need it

It feels cold here at the moment - I've gone totally soft now, sitting wrapped in a blanket.

Small generators are quite inexpensive ..............
enough for a hot plate and a light anyway .......

I can sympathize with you and the rest of the Seattle area. I lived through the Ice Storm of January 1998 which hit as far north as Ottawa, Canada and extended down through upper New York State, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. We were without light and heat for 5 days with no means of getting in or out of Ottawa, (I was visiting my husband for the New Year) let alone getting into a car and driving to an area with electricity for a bit of relief.
At least you have lights and heat now and are able to venture out. Take Care.
