Re: No British blood allowed in the US
That explains a lot about some of the posters here on BE, at least a third of us have mad cow syndrome and I know who some are from their postings.

One of the markers is the excessive use of smilies.
The title is not exactly correct, some arrivals predate mad cow, mine being one.

I think the regulations made sense when it looked like there was going to be a vCJD epidemic. Given that hasn't happened, I don't think the ban makes a lot of sense at this point, despite the long incubation period of vCJD.

Add to the list of blood and organs, breast milk.
Can't donate that either, which is a bugger as it goes for $45 a ounce....and we've got a freezer full of spare milk.

I'm asking because we have some spare and for that sort of money it would be worth selling it.

I'm curious where you're getting this figure of $45 an ounce from Bob. My understanding was that you could donate breast milk to milk banks and they would cover the costs of screening etc (or rather the buyer does), but they don't pay you, or if they did it would only be a few dollars an ounce.

If it's been stored in a fridge freezer, it's got to be within 3 months, but if in a stand alone freezer it can be 12 months and the baby has to be within a year of age when the milk was expressed.
So when the missus knocked over a small tub of milk, I saw $100 splashing down the drain

Local bank pays for screening and per ounce, but you've got to provide in 100 ounce increments. They sell it on for about $50-60 a ounce that insurance companies will pay, for premie babies.

Britain used to have similar rules re who can donate blood. I knew a West African, in the biblican sense, and was barred from giving blood in the UK in the 1980's because of the threat of HIV. Was worth it though!
