NIC - switch from class 3 to class 2?

Hi all,

I'm interested if anybody has any thoughts or experience with successfully switching from class 3 payments to class 2?

A friend of mine appears to have been miscategorized when first arriving in the US. He paid class 3 for several years, but has made no contributions for the past few years, and would like to now be able to pay catch up at the class 2 rate.

I assume a simple phone call to HMRC would be a good place to start, but would welcome any advise, gotchas or alternative suggestions.

Thx!

As you suggest you are probably best advised to call or write.

Was your friend ordinarily employed or self-employed immediately before leaving? Did they start working immediately upon arrival in the US?

And why didn't your friend flag the "misscategorization" when it originally happened?

I suggest reading NI38 as a first step and then to contact the NI hotline and talk to an international case worker.
