Don't be overly sure of yourself.
What US officials here say and what immigration officials at immigration say can be two totally different things. And you have a significant chance of problems boarding in the UK if your kid doesn't have a US passport. UK airline staff are only used to dealing with passports - not birth certificates.
GET THE US PASSPORT.

Well...spoke to someone who is linked to immigration... he said this is not unusual... so we have NOT got his US passport yet... have decided to wait until we become citizens in Sept... so....we leave tomorrow pm and rtn on Sunday 4th Jan.... will udpate ASAP on rtn...

If that is the case then will get USA passport from US embassy in London...but thanks for the concern.

You're taking a lot of risk. Who did you speak to at immigration? I really hope this was not the call centre number. Will this person vouch for you at the boarding gate in the UK? Upon arrival in the US?
