New York?
We are having 4 days in New York early Dec. Does anyone know of a safe clean but not too expensive way of staying there? Probably unlikely but thought I'd ask. Would have 2 kids with us. Thanks

Can you define "not too expensive?" You should be able to find hotels around
$150 per night for a room big enough for 4. Or try one of the suites hotels;
Seaport Suites in lower Manhattan, for example.

The South Gate across the street from Madison Square Garden is also an
all suite hotel with kitchens in every room. There are other "Gate'
hotels as well that are all suite with kitchens.

No. No matter where you go in NYC, someone can kill you.

I hope the poster jests? New York is quite safe. If you would state
your hotel budget perhaps someone can make some suggestions.
That will be your biggest cost. Food -- you can find eats for a
little or a lot, your choice. New York has more food than you
probably will ever have seen before and it is offered in all price
ranges. Subway fare is quite reasonable, the kiddies may ride
free depending upon their ages. Many of the things to see or do
are free.

Budget, would be lovely to find 150 US or less, or am I dreaming.? Also should we be concerned about vacancy rates in early Dec? Thank you in advance.

The poster stated a fact regardless of how safe New York, or any other
place, is. Did you fail to understand the statement?

No, I understood the statement. It was not a particularly good
reply to someone seeking information. We in New York realize all
too well that many have the mistaken notion our city is not safe for
tourists. We like to reassure them it is.
Do you have a problem with that?

Re: New York?
You might want to try the choice hotel group
www.choicehotels.com I was
checking and found Quality Hotel on Broadway (upper West side). I think it
is about $125 a night for two doubles. It was close to subways and dining
and kids always stay free. Make sure to choose internet users rate under
rate type on their website, it will give you about a 10% discount. Last time
I stayed in NYC I stayed in one of their hotels (Comfort Inn Midtown) and it
was a fine hotel though it is a little more costly due to a Time Square
location. Someone else may be able to better comment on the area this hotel
is in (94th and Broadway) but it seemed like a nice enough area from
everything I checked out. I would feel comfortable taking my children there.
If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

Re: New York?
Thank you very much for the info. We have found 2 hotels that are almost half of what we were offered them for in Australia. Very pleased. We have of course debated the safey issue, but my opinion is now that New York would hopefully be one of the most guarded places from Terrorists. With the world events now, it is probaly not safe to go anywhere, but I cannot give up travelling, we have to see family in the UK and Vancouver and we are going anyway. Wish us luck and Thank you again.

When my college friend from Pittsburgh visits New York with her
daughters, she stays at the Holiday Inn Express - Midtown. I don't know
the exact rate, but Karen told me they had a special Family Rate. You
might ask about that. As for early December, it depends on the
individual hotel. Also, if you haven't already purchased your air, some
airlines offer family vacation air/hotel packages.
Several television shows: David Letterman, Conan O'Brian, Saturday Night
Live offer free television audience tickets. (There is an age
limitation for children.) Check web pages for NBC and
http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/-
for The Late Show With David
Letterman. David Letterman tickets are in great demand. You might
apply even before your plans are 100% firm. It is possible to stand in
line for Conan O'Brian a few hours before taping and get seated. SNL
demand goes up and down.

You could try the Skyline Hotel on 49th Street and 10th
Avenue. I stayed there for around $130 in June
Nice big modern rooms and a pool
Check an agency like hotelbook.com
or travelocity for the best rates as well as the hotels
own web site and yes you should
be concerned about vacancy rates

It is terrorists you are concerned about? No one can guarantee
that another attack will not occur anywhere. New York is going about
its business as usual. We do not have armed soldiers on the streets.
The law enforcement community is alert but no one is restricted in
their movements. You may have a bag searched entering a museum
but that is about it.

Try the Gershwin Hotel, it's pretty cool, and not to expensive.
