If you are here on a student visa make sure you are correctly enrolled and fulfilling all your other obligations to remain in valid status!
The Department of Homeland Security will "effective immediately" verify that every international student visa is valid, according to an internal memo obtained by the Associated Press news agency on Friday.
Under the new procedures, border agents will verify a student's visa status before the person arrives in the US, using information provided in flight manifests.
If that information is unavailable, they will manually check the visa status through a US database.

I was gobsmacked that they let Students in without checking.

In this case yes but was referring generally to any other rule where checks may have been lax. Expect more AP checks, questions about even the smallest infraction, speeding tickets I don't know.

True
You would have thought after 911....
On other boards, and of course you always have some doubt as to the truth, I have some seen some very weird cases where Visa's have been granted and you think WTF.
