New passport for new family member...
Hi, so, we have great news. A new member of the family born in Manhattan, a baby boy :) just got his social and birth certificate. thinking about applying for passport ASAP as we will need to travel later this year and I know it can take a while. he has two British parents. Anything to note or be aware of when applying for his first passport (full international, not a passport card)? looks like we can go to a ‘local’ government post office to apply. any recommendations for a smooth process. I’d consider paying more to make it faster and smoother although if it can be done locally relatively straighforwardly then that’s great, we’ll do that. Btw we’re in Williamsburg. thanks in advance! |

Congrats! Looks like you can also apply at the library at Grand Army Plaza. Even looks like they can take your passport picture too,$18. I'm not sure how much value he'll get from a passport card, but they aren't much more when you get them with a passport book. The summer rush for passport applications is winding down, so I wouldn't pay extra to expedite it. Again congratulations.

Re: New passport for new family member...
Being that you are in Manhattan, why in the world would you pay for expediting a passport when it is not going to be used for at least the next four to five months? Yes, you and the Mrs. will have to take time off to go to the passport office in person and bring the documentation required as per the instruction sheet on the US Passport website. Believe it will be the child's birth certificate, and both your birth certificates/passports. I say both of you since it is a child and both parents need to consent to the Passport. US Passports are only taking 5 to 10 days.
There is an office on Hudson Street. You need an appointment. https://travel.state.gov/content/tra.../new-york.html Or you can apply at the US Post Office. This site is useful https://www.us-passport-service-guid...-passport.html |

Agree though about your point, either way an expitided passport service shouldn’t be required hopefully. So what is the benefit of a passport card then, if you also get a passport? Is it a good backup for internal flights to avoid the risk of losing the main passport? |
Re: New passport for new family member...
Passport cards are good for cruisers because they are cheaper to get, without getting a passport book, by themselves. My nephew got them for his 2 daughters when they went on a Disney cruise. Williamsburg is in Brooklyn right? Otherwise ignore my link to the library at Grand Army....

Probably will go away end sept once his vaccinations etc are good. That’s the plan anyway, if he is ready enough. You said you wouldn't be traveling until later this year. Not that you would be traveling in 6 to 8 WEEKS.
by normal means we should likely get it back within 2 months with high probability, do you think? |
Re: New passport for new family member...
I got my replacement US passport back in one week. I applied at the US Postal Service in May.

Re: New passport for new family member...
You should also consider British consular birth registration and/or a British passport for your son.

Re: New passport for new family member...
Regular US passports generally arrive in 1-3 weeks. Its pretty fast so no need to pay extra
