Do you know what visa he'll be here on? Does he work for the company already in the UK, or is this a job with a new company? More information from you will improve the quality of our answers, since your initial question is really WAY to broad!

Hi I realise my question was quite vague, the company he works for are moving from Boston and are in finance, we thought the move was to New York but found out today that it is NJ but they have no location as yet, I am guessing that it would be the part near to NY but as I have only visited NY as a tourist I have no idea where that might be. If it had been a job in Boston we would have been quite keen as we know it quite well but it seems pretty daunting to move somewhere we have no idea about, any info would be great.
thankyou
he does work for the company already in the UK and would be on an L1 visa, hopefully i will have more information soon and will be able to ask more relevant questions. thanks anyway

Hi Susiesue,

I'm sure Englishmum and Jerseygirl will be along shortly with their wealth of info on New Jersey, but just wanted to say hi. I have recently moved over to NJ (2 weeks ago actually!!) with hubby and 2 kids (7 and 8) and so far so good. The YMCA's seem really popular over here for kids activities, with swimming lessons, movie nights, gym classes etc ...

From what I've seen (again bearing in mind I'm very new here) kids are very much involved in after school sports as well, so you don't tend to get many kids hanging around the street corners, at least not from where we're located. Take a look at this website http://www.kidsguide.com/ , contains loads of things to do in New Jersey with kids

Good luck

PP

hi there

sounds like a great opportunity for a couple of yrs esp as the kiddies are still young enough for it not to have that great an effect on their school work.

jerseygirl lives in nj and although she is away for a while i'm sure she'll have some answers for you on her return.

all the best!

What do you mean by plenty to do? The children will be going to school, right?

Yes the children will be in school, we live in the countryside in the uk so I guess I was wondering how accessible the countryside in NJ is for evenings weekends etc. The links people have given have been very usefull and we are waiting to hear where my husband would be based so we can look at areas around there. Many thanks for the links

Hello there and welcome to BE.

It would really help if you could give us some indication whereabouts in NJ your husband will be working. Generally the further away from NYC the more rural the area will be...not necessarily cheaper but there is more space.

BTW do you have any idea how expensive it is to live in NJ? We have the highest property taxes in the country. Utilities, auto insurance, healthcare insurance is amongst the highest in the US. Make sure you get a good relo package from your husband's company. Use the search facility at the top of the page to search for old threads about relocation packages...it will give you some good advice on what to ask for. Give me a shout if you need any help finding the old threads.

Edit: Here's a few for you to take a look at:
