"Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, a sponsor of the bill who attended the signing, said the law brings Florida into line with other states.

"We're not breaking ground here. We're catching up," Baxley said."

Anyone know which other states have this law already?

Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arizona have the make my day law which seems to be pretty much the same.

I love this quote:

"Under a life threatening situation, you have to retreat and put yourself in a very precarious condition. It defies common sense,"

That's right because staying and shooting it out is going to be some much safer.

Did not know that, so next time someone tries and cuts me up in their SUV or Truck (I have a small car) no need to back off - BANG.

I would need something fairly hefty to take out a SUV though. Does it equally apply to RPG's?

I'd rather get into a fist fight than get shot over road rage or..... knock down ginger.

I saw Jon Stewart ripping this one a new one on The Daily Show last night. It defies logic, which is why Republicans love it.

Residents will no longer have a duty to retreat when they encounter a threat outside the home. The bill said a Floridian has the "right to stand his or her ground."

What the f**ks the big problem? Your life is threatened and you kill the SOB instead of getting killed or maimed yourself? Sounds quite logical and correct to me.

Thats a load of bollox. You still have to justify your use of lethal force in a court of law. You just have the right to use it in defence of your own life and limb (or a third party's) anywhere you have the legal right to be. If you shot someone because they cut you up you are still going to jail. Best part of the new law is that if you are justified in using lethal force then the bad guy and/or his family can no longer sue you for damages. Also note this does not only apply to the use of firearms, you could now, for instance, legally use a baseball bat or what ever to defend yourself if you are somewhere you are legally entitled to be and someone tries to mug/rape/assault you. This also doesnt change the law as regards carrying a weapon: you still have to be lawfully licensed to carry by the state and and still cannot brandish or use a weapon as leverage in an argument, for instance.

As far as I can see its a good reason to live in Florida and I applaud the state for having the guts to give rights back to the lawabiding of the place to defend ourselves against the scum of society. Infact all those that have in other threads said they would kill someone who attacked their kids....now we have the right to do that very thing at the time the attack takes place.
