Usually the first document you get that allows you to start the license process is EAD.

Colorado does give licenses to Prospective Citizens, most States are not so advanced and require proof of legal presence.

Often what's the problem if you don't have a license is needing to take lessons from someone and take a test with someone who has held a US license for x years, usually 3 years, or a year if held in the state if over 21.

In theory you can get an EAD before marriage, but as far as I understand, in practice, it's usually simpler to get married and then include the EAD application form in your application for Adjustment of Status. The EAD usually follows within 90 days.
Once you have received your green card, you go back to the Social Security Administration and apply for a new Social Security card without the employment endorsement. Your Social Security number will stay the same.
A drivers license is a near-essential ID document in the United States. For those who don't drive, most (if not all) states issue an ID card. You should obtain one or the other as soon as possible.

No on-the-road instruction required, but you can't get a CT license without the certificate showing you did the 8 hours of classroom instruction....

I dunno, I never got a state ID until I got a learner's permit last year after having been in the US for over three years.
