Re: Nelly1975's questions on buying a house in the USA
I did my road test in Herkimer (which is right on the Thruway) on a Friday morning, then we drove east, across the Adirondacks, which are very rural indeed, and spent the weekend in Vermont and New Hampshire.

I can remember from some of your older posts how cheap housing was in your area of New York State. It was surprising to me. A lot of Americans don't realize how large and rural New York State is. I got a good introduction to it when in Jan 1968 I had to drive from Ind across New York State to my newly assigned Air Force base in Manchester NH during a severe snow storm.
It was 35 mph ,much of the time in second gear , the whole way. Mainly just me and the trucks on the thruway.

Our food bill is approx. $850/month for two people, all other expenses (one car/mortgage/electric/cable/cell/student loan) come to $3950/month. Add on 4 kids, some with disabilities, I would drown on $63k/year.
I didnt even include heat (first year in our house, $1500 for the winter in MA), add that on as well, things start to get scary. If heat not required, offset with air con costs?

Appreciate we lost Nelly some time back now, but adding my 2c worth.
I live in Orlando too. Used to live in Houston (probably the 2 places that get the most grief on here!) Before bonus, I earn almost exactly what Pulaski suggested. We live a very average life. nothing special at all. Especially when you factor in anyone from the UK moving to Davenport is obviously driven by "The Mouse" so is going to have to factor in 6 annual passes there as well
One other thing. Of almost all the areas around Orlando to live in with kids of school age, Davenport would by right down the list for me. School ratings are poor and Polk county is the crystal meth capital of the US. Sure you could rent a big old house in Davenport for not a lot of cash, but would you want to? I wouldn't
