The OP has no doubt been on one of those alternative facts web site that said people can get help on BE.

Cheeky, yes, but one can be both naturalized British and eligible for the lottery by birth some place else.

The clue should be in the name "BritishExpats," by definition there has to be a period and certain amount of derogation, doom....gloom with a little negativity thrown in Before any worthwhile advice is given!

I was thinking of AirBnb and a Uber to get there.

If it were 'British' expats only, half the users would have to leave.

I smell something beginning with B and ending in T.
Anyone going on to a public forum asking for a room in LA instead of renting one is either high, crazy, has special needs or making up stories for some truly bizarro reason.

We've had stranger threads - I've seen several from people begging for money to pay for flights when they claim they can't afford the fare home, and even people asking if anyone is shipping goods to a particular country and is willing to take a sealed box or two of unspecified goods as part of the shipment

On the other hand, this could be genuine desperation leading to desperate calls for help. In which case the person can go to social services, the police or a church for help. The internet is not the right place for it.
