Nanny au pair or housekeeper in ny

Hi. I am moving to ny with hub n three kids. He will be on h1b visa.
Does anyone know if we can hire an au pair?
Otherwise what is the cost of nanny/ housekeeper

I don't think the spouse of a H1 visa holder can work (correct me if I'm wrong), so you might be "it", the nanny au pair & housekeeper. I don't know the pay for those jobs though or what hoops you may have to jump through to employ one or even if you can. Maybe cheaper DIYing it.

You can save about ⅔ the cost, I hear, by bringing one in from India. :sneaky:

Lots and they are really unreliable. Knew a friend who went back to work, even with a nanny share did not break even, still went back to work because she loves her job.

Au-Pair thing, well plenty of agencies to look into that. Quite popular with the Brazilians in my area.

Still expensive...and a Nanny, more so if they're not living in house.

In Ohio I paid my nanny about 26k a year, not incl Ssn and Medicare etc. that fig was not witholding taxes from her so she paid those herself, and I was liable for some too.

She worked7.30 to 5 mon thru Friday, I found her through care.com. When kids where in school or preschool she I'd light houskeeping. She was not live in.

Live in or live out? I have a friend who is a live in au pair in NYC for three children. She gets paid $55,000 plus room and board and they also fully pay for her health insurance.

My SIL in Greenwich CT paid her au pair $18k a year (live out), that was about 10 years ago and was considered a pretty good deal.

That's awful low. I knew Irish girls in NYC making more than that as nannys 25 years ago.

A good deal for your SIL, yes! Only someone with other wage earners in the family can survive on minimum wage in Greenwich.

Can't they get a foreign live in student au pair for about $500 per month through an agency?

An agency would seem like the way to go -- especially if they were the employer and paid the au pair so that the family didn't have to worry about payroll taxes and withholdings.

I was referring to the J1 Visa Exchange Au Pair Program which I think is handled through a agency for a fee and the family pays up to $500 per month towards the au pair's academic course work. I don't think there are any taxes involved since the money paid is considered similar to a gift.

I see -- I was thinking of the specialist employment agencies that provide nannies and home help in NYC, not an exchange program.

The au pair didn't live in Greenwich... do any of them if they're not in-house? She lived somewhere much cheaper.

She did have another wage earner in her family though. Her son turned out to be a drug dealer until he got busted by the DEA :-)
