My 5 year old has an abscess on tooth. Anyone experienced this?
Bloody hell - she knocked it when she fell in the bath aged 2 and its been fine but grey ever since. I took her to the dentist for the first time last week - there was no sign of this at that time of course - she refused flatly to sit in the chair; have x-rays or generally participate in any way shape or form.
The very next day, bless her, she tells me she has a spot in her mouth - diagnosis by internet (& verified by dentist office over the telephone), she has an abscess on the dead tooth. Excellent, an already dentist phobic 5 year old having to have treatment for an abscess.
I am presuming they will pull it. Has anyone else been through similar thing, ie small child hating dentist but with problem that has to be sorted?
I have found a specialist paediatric dentist so hopefully that will help - ha ha!

My son refused to let anyone look inside his mouth at the Family Dentist but then we changed to a Pediatric Dentist and he doesn't mind going - he's had about 6 fillings (they gave him a whiff of laughing gas to help relax him a bit) The Pediatric one we go to doesn't let the parents go into the treatment area either, which I was a bit uncomfortable about -it's like, what the hell are they doing to my kid? Anyway, they have loads of patience and experience with little uns and now he doesn't even whince when I say it's check up time, so they must be doing something right....

I was not 5yrs but 12yrs unbelieveable pain, I was knocked out as I went crazy hated the dentist and he pulled the tooth out the pain of an abscess at any age is terrible, then my gums would not stop bleeding so I had to have stitchs in my mouth.....but that was even better then the pain, if she does not have it out the infection could spread with or without anitbiotics..
Hope all goes OK

This helped with my son's fear of dentist's a bit....we bought some dental tools from the pharmacy - mirror, wee pointy thing (I think it's called an explorer) etc and would "play" dentist's at home, making it fun. He eventually let me put those things into his mouth and didn't seem so scared after a while...just a thought!

appointment is on thursday morning, dentists are aware that its an abscess, to be honest she doesnt appear to be in any pain, is eating and drinking ok, brushing her teeth fine, no fever or anything - yet! but its not going to get better by itself. if it flares up before thursday i will just go straight there and refuse to move until they look at it.

If she's in no pain maybe it's not an abcess. If it's an abcess I would have thought by Thursday she'll be going through the roof.

yeh thats my worry, the tooth has been black for a few years, its started to wobble in the past 3 weeks, now there is a spot on the gum just above that same tooth. perhaps its not so painful cos the tooth is already dead? buggered if I know!

After I've been chewing I sometimes get what looks like a tiny abcess where my top and bottom jaw meet. It doesn't hurt but can be a little uncomfortable. Both my dentist in the UK and here said it was nothing to worry about.
