Default Murdered place names

Whilst eating lunch I overheard a news story on "local" news channel about the barges lifting the containers of the beached cargo ship off the "Deee-Von" coast. He then continued the broadcast and said that they were working to clear up the oil on the "devon- Sorry Deee-von" coast line.

That's the worst one I have heard, even though locally in Tennessee we have a "Milan" that is pronounced "Mylan".

Anyone else have some classics?

I love the way the wife calls Edinburgh 'Edinburg', does that count?

There's a street in Chicago called Devon - pronounced D'Van
I'd heard it mentioned before I went there - couldn't believe it when I saw the sign.

There's also a town near by called Elgin (like the place near Aberdeen and the marbles) - pronounced EL-Gin

The one that springs to mind is Newcastle. Many times I've heard them order the beer: "Get me a New-Castle"

Thing is though, Brits are also notorious for bad pronunciation of foreign names also. Majorca being the one that springs to mind.

That is the pronunciation of the city in the Texas Rio Grande Valley called
Edinburg. Why didn't the Scots spell it 'Edinboro' huh?

How does one pronounce "Newcastle" then? Obviously no full stop between "new" and "castle" but....

The Brits massacre the pronunciation of "Los Angeles" -- what's with "Lohs Angelees?"
