Default Moving to the US - Question about American Region 1 DVD

Hi,

I'm about to move to the US with my American husband.
I have a question -
we have load of old family camcorder movies that were saved on English VHS video, but we now want to copy them onto American Region 1 DVDs.

Can anyone help with this?
It seems that we can only do VHS to DVD from the same country.
We have a UK VHS player, and also a US DVD recorder, but they dont seem to want to communicate!

Maybe someone else had figured out a way to do this?

Thanks : )

Hi Middlemore ,

I've moved our thread into our USA forum for you, and whilst I can't answer your question I'm sure someone will know and will be along shortly to give you some tips.

Anyway welcome to BE and the best of luck with your move. What part of the US are you moving to?

Stuff you convert to DVD will be regionless, so don't worry about it.

If you're using your own dvd recorder, it is perhaps looking for a NTSC signal and not reading PAL, there might be a option to switch this....but if you've a lot of dvd's, it should only cost a few quid to get a shop to batch do them for you.

Which part of the US?

I wish I knew!
My husband is currently working in Seattle, and might be moving to Chicago, but wants to stay west near his mom in San Fransisco.

In the meantime, our son is staying in the UK to start university, so I'm struggling with the whole empty nest thing at the same time as trying to organise a move.

So the video problem is just the final straw today : )

Well it sounds like you've got a few options then

I feel you on the empty nest thing. My son leaves for a UK university next week.

To be honest, empty nest seems more daunting that everything else put together right now.
Green cards are almost complete, I've got my licence to work, (I'm an RN, in both countries), and selling up and moving are just things to get done, I'll carry on sorting boxes until its all finished. I'm used to traveling backwards and forwards to the US, we've been living like this for four years now.

But empty nest - its just awful. I can't deal with this one at all, and the lack of videos of the old school nativity plays is making everything grind to a halt.

Two weeks to go before I drive my boy down to his university. Two weeks and one day until I become a complete wreck.

It's quite difficult to get acceptable results using DIY without a modicum of technical knowledge and specialist hardware.

BTW, your conversion is PAL VHS to NTSC MPEG-2. The region code is irrelevant -- you would set it to 0. Both the picture size and the frame rate will need adjustment -- a processor-intensive task.

However, most US retail DVD players will happily play PAL MPEG-2 without issue. What is difficult to find is a US retail VHS player that can play PAL VHS tapes.

I have absolutely no idea what you just said (being technologically challenged) but I have a teenage son who will be able to translate and use that information!

Thank you!

But for this, they would be regionless, so it wouldn't be an issue.

Handy to have a cheapo regionless player though, for all those bought DVD's.

To the OP, if you end up in Chicago, do you know what you'd need to do to get licensed in IL from being licensed in CA?

You mean my nursing licence?

I know I'll need to transfer it, but I haven't investigated the requirements yet until we know for definite we are going to IL.
Its next on my list of things to do. Right now I'm in the middle of sending my son off to university, and organising the tenant in our house in England. I can only deal with two crises at a time!

(but if you have insider knowledge of the job situation for an RN in Chicagoland, I would be very interested!)
