Hi everyone,

Has anyone had recent experience in moving their household belongings to the US after
getting their immigrant visa?

Can you describe the procedure, what preparations are to be made for the US Customs,
(In particular for moving from Canada by road, and for importing a car.)

Any personal experiences to be found on the web?

Thanks.

Any good moving company should be able to tell you what forms are needed for US
Customs. I moved from Canada about 30 years ago and the moving company had the forms
needed. Otherwise I would call US Customs and ask them. I don't know about importing
a car.>Has anyone had recent experience in moving their

I moved to the US in March of 1999 using a U-haul truck. I did not have any official
"documents", however I did have my visa, as well as an iemized listing of the
contents. We went so far as to number the boxes, and had a listing per box as well.

Don't know what it is going to be like now, but it was pretty easy when I moved. I
never even had truck opened as a matter of fact........ Guess it was the preparation
and lists I provided..... Or, I was just lucky.

Your list was a little excessive, but that's the idea ... just as the movers do it.
In the case of the movers, they have the printed forms, and they have to have a bit
more authorization from you because they need proof that they are moving
pre-contracted loads (because they cannot freelance), they must have the documents to
haul someone else's stuff. etc.

But that works for sure!

The question of importing a car makes things a bit thornier, though?

Absolutely! If you import your car and have your mover move it and they are willing
(many aren't), make sure you have all the needed paperwork.
