Moving from UK to L.A....Logistic help please
Hi
So it's looking likely my wife will be transferred to LA and we'll go over this summer. I have a few questions about logistically moving...
- How do we organise a place to live in LA while still being in the UK?
- we will ship furniture over to the states but if we go into a hotel at first, how would we organise for the removals to know where to deliver the furniture
- I've read we won't have a credit score so how do we go about organising a house to live in and getting a car?
Thanks

Car = International Autosource. Finance through IA and you will also be building a credit score as soon as you obtain a SSN for your credit information to be indexed against. I used them and recommend them highly, and frequently.
The shipping company knows how to get in touch and obtain a delivery address. I think it's magic or something like that. Or they contact you by something called "e-mail."
You may have to stay in a hotel for a few days after you arrive, and then find a home to rent when you arrive. People report different experiences, with some "corporate" landlords being accommodating of new immigrants with no credit history, but others, not so much. My tip would be to find a private landlord as they, IMO, are more likely to be flexible. Either way, be prepared to stump up several months rent up front. I would advise strongly against trying to rent "sight-unseen", because there are some scams with people being ripped off, and not least because you need to see the actual building and the neighborhood before committing to live there.

Re shipping: sarcasm noted but my point being we won't have a delivery address at the point of them packing us up...we won't know until we are out there in the hotel looking for somewhere to live

Not sure on which part yet, I'm also after advice on locations...somewhere suitable for families, tree lined street. Her office is downtown so somewhere not a massive commute away

We didn't either, I suspect most people don't have an address when they ship their house contents. But shipping things is not like using the mail - the sending shipper is in touch with their agent frequently, discussing many shipments, so the final delivery address can be advised long after your things have left the UK, or even after they have arrived in the US and are warehoused awaiting delivery. I think we just notified the shipping company with our address when we got one. ..... I understand you worrying, but in the grand scheme of things it is not a big problem.

You should be able to use some of the realty websites to put in her office location zip code and do some preliminary searching that way.

My husband works most of the time in West Hollywood (pretty far from downtown LA). But after having been to LA and passing downtown along the way, I am not sure there is such a thing as working downtown without a massive commute away.

If that's anywhere near practical it opens up areas like Orange County which may be more in line with what you describe.

You just need somewhere short term to begin with. Budget, age of children, max commute time?

The Los Feliz and Silver Lake areas seem to fit your description. So might the Atwater area.
If working in downtown, do look at the Metro Red Line for the location of their stations. This is actually a good form of public transit and might expand the possibilities.
Also, you might want to consider the adjacent city of Glendale.
Highland Park is an area now in transition and becoming somewhat "hipster."
Echo Park north of Sunset [actually north of Scott Street] might be of interest.
If the public schools are important to you, Franklin Avenue Elementary in Los Feliz has a good reputation.

Also, I don't think that the area is really family friendly just yet.
