We arrived 2 weeks before school started and were told our children required additional jabs before they could start school. As our US healthcare hadn't kicked yet it cost us $400.
We also found that school placement is based on your address, as is the case in the UK, so make sure you choose your house within the catchment area of your chosen school, unless you are going private.

We have 2 girls aged 6 and 11.

Regards, Simon

P.S. If the company is paying for shipping try and ship as much as you can! We left silly things at home like christmas decorations and kitchen utensils which we then needed to re-purchase.
thanks Simon ! We are living in Sunbury !! not from Staines...thanks for the reply. I have called my GP today and hopefully they will give me a list of the jabs we had so far next week .
My daughter is 6 and half in year 2 at he moment. She cried when I told her we will be moving . I don't think she will be happy to hear if potentially there will be some jabs (needles) involved...

Ahhh, poor baby. Will she be losing her grandparents and/or aunts and uncles when you move? No kid likes jabs but if you can get the list from the school before you move, you would then be able to get them from your physician there without worrying about medical insurance being in effect immediately or not.

Dublin ot a bad choice, once you have been here for awhile you can decide what works best for you. I move three times in the Bay Area before I settled on where I wanted to be. Now I have to decide where I want to live during retirement, downsizing in this area wouldn't buy me much in the way off saving money.
You have the advantage of the internet, google maps, and Wikipedia and sites like this, although it can be more confusing than help. I knew very little in advance when I came and had learn as I went. Two small children 18months and 4 years old. What was I thinking, it all worked out fine.

Ha - before we came over to the US we lived in Addlestone and I worked in both Staines and Sunbury (for Bupa).

there wont be many shots shes missing. One you will need to work out is Chicken Pox. Both my sons had tha chicken pox before we left the UK - so they didnt need the shot when we got here - but i have to supply the date instead. My daughter who was born here had the shots.

Dublin to San Jose is a horrible commute, in a part of CA where there are no good commutes....

There are carpool lanes and fastrak. http://bayareaexpresslanes.org/get-fastrak/

There is a commuter train that goes from Pleasanton to San Jose, a lot of companies provide shuttle buses that will pick up at your stop.

The best place to live if you want an easy commute for San Jose? Santa Clara or San Jose.

The freeways (680 & 880) are awful in rush hour..especially around the "Sunol grade" - you hear about it EVERY morning and afternoon commute on the traffic news.

Driving...you should plan for a 1hr 15 minute commute each way. Sometimes it'll be better...but being prepared for the worst lets you be pleasantly surprised more.

A colleague of mine has what I would call a super commute. He lives in Roseville and commutes to South San Francisco...3 hours each way...each day.

If you can afford it, try Cupertino, Campbell, Saratoga, Los Gatos. Nice areas, good schools... but, as with anything, you pay for what you get.

Note that they're building an extension to the BART line which is projected to open 2018 and will be extended even further into San Jose, eventually reaching downtown. The stations which will be opening soonest (Milpitas and Berryessa) will link to the VTA light rail system.

IMO, the East Bay is a much nicer place to live than the South Bay. Depending where your husband's office is located, he may be able to make public transport work from Dublin either through a combo of BART and VTA or just through BART if his office is north San Jose. That way, he'd only have to put up with a crappy car commute for a few months until the stations open.

Even if it's not doable in the short term, a long term plan might be to move out to the Dublin area once the BART line into San Jose is fully completed.

The ACE Train is an option Pleasanton (next to the Fairground) to Jan Jose with two stops in Santa Clara. I did it for several years, the company I worked for ran a shuttle from San Jose Stn. Door to door service, They also compensated me for the train fare.
