Default Moving to New Jersey Private /Public School?

Hi all!

I'd love your advice. We're moving to NJ from Suffolk UK next Summer 2017 for my Husband's job in NYC. We're looking to live within decent commuting distance for him - maybe around Summit or Chatham NJ primarily to keep a country lifestyle without being too far from NYC / Wall St. We're emigrating for good. We have one son who would be about to start Yr 9 in the UK. He's currently got a place at Winchester College in the UK to board, but we want to start him in a US school instead. We would miss each other and my health is such that I won't be able to travel to and from the UK much in a couple of years to watch him in plays etc which would be too much of a separation.

We hear that 'Public' schools in the states can be really good - and just want him to develop to his full potential rather than hot-house him. He thrives when he can learn with inspirational teachers but less so under pressure. He's sporty and makes friends easily. He is smart enough to get a place at Winchester and be in the scholars stream at his prep school (though not to get a Winchester scholarship!) and very conscientious. He has some strength of character but can be swayed by peer pressure to some extent on fads etc - he's not one to get into trouble though, and is popular with teachers and pupils.

Really I am leaning towards the good public schools in NJ but wonder what your experience is of private / public schools in the area?
Thank you so much!

My daughter went to US private school from the age of 11. Private schools are very expensive...it doesn't stop with the school fees!

I believe there are also excellent public schools in the Summit area. Is suggest you use the BE search engine to search for threads on Summit and take a read through Englishmum's threads/posts as she lived in Summit and her son went to the local school.

Great thank you - am finding lots of great info on this thread and the link you sent looks great too.

I still hope someone can advise on public vs private schools - in other words, in the UK we tried 2 state schools with terrible experiences in both, so had to go private. I hear well rated public schools are really good in the States but wonder if it's worth the risk after our experience in the UK. We can afford private but do members think it's worth it? Is there much that public schools won't offer? Thank you!
