Moving to Micronesia with Green Card - effect on naturalization
I just came across an interesting question. Somebody suggested that I
should move to an island in Micronesia and accept a job there. Many of the islands there have special relationships with the US, and to make things more complicated, the status of each island is different from its neighbor. Now my question: if I moved to one of these islands, would that be considered leaving the United States, would I be giving up my Green Card? If not, would the time spent there count as "physically presence" for naturalization purposes? Here are the islands in question, and I'd appreciate any opinions on how safe or unsafe it would be (in terms of retaining GC and naturalization) to move there. Guam: that's easy, it's a US possession and treated the same as Puerto Rico or the mainland. Saipan/Tinian/Rota (Northern Mariana Islands): These are a US "Commonwealth" and are semi-independent. I believe US immigration laws were only recently introduced there; they used to have their own rules. Ponope/Truk (Federated States of Micronesia, I believe). I don't know their status. Palau: I believe this is a completely independent country, so the answer is fairly simple again. Thank you very much! Ingo |
