Moving to Maine
 

Hello to you all. I've just found this site and thank god for it (or who ever came up with the idea). My husband and I are moving to the States early next year. We are going over to Maine in October to look at houses. We seem to be drawn to the kennebec region. Is there anyone here in the area? Any advice or info about Maine would be greatly appreciated.

Yes and no; paradise has relatively more summer than winter, whereas I believe that Maine does not! :D

Ah but everyone has their own paradise :rolleyes: Maine (I hope is ours):) We are both sunworshipers and skiers and as long as their is plenty of :beer: we will be in paradise

Well each to his own as they say, I love it warm any day.

I spend a lot of time in Vermont (near Maine) and can only say that the few times we have tried to get to the cabin in winter were fun if you like snow measured in feet rather than inches.

New England to me is paradise!

At last someone who appreciates breathtaking landscapes,snow and frostbite:( Don't get me wrong I love the sun and will happily bake for hours to achieve a glow;) But I was born in Cyprus and and couldn't wait to get to England for "Christmas card winters" Not. I haven't seen one in 28 years!!

We moved to Maine from Edinburgh 15 months ago and the experience has been very positive. We are living in Orono, north of Bangor. It's true about the snow and the cold, but you get used to it and the summers are great. One thing not mentioned here are the bugs -- which are pretty bad from May to September -- but again, you get used to it. The cost of living is very low , although there is a lack of culture and diversity, so if you are looking for museums and cinemas - Maine is not the place for you. However, if you enjoy kayking, hiking. skiing and biking then it is.

We go to Maine on vacation most years - normally Down-East region either Bar Harbor/Acadia or Deer Isle. Both are stunning year round but particularly with the fall change of colours. I've never seen such bright/gold/orange foliage - stunning.

Would recommend Maine, but would hesitate about the industry situation (tourism really keeps it going, unless you are a fisherman or a farmer).

I wouldn't say I appreciate it as such... more like put up with it! :)

Summer in Vermont can not be compared with... warm days and cool nights are a treat from the smothering humidity in Connecticut. But the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, Silos and fields, Autumn foliage... I could go on for hours. I could go on as long as the wandering valleys... I suggest an ex-pat meet up in Vermont. Cabin sleeps at least 20... bring your own wellies.

I have been to Maine many times for work and agree about the insects. But it is a breathtakingly beautiful state in winter and summer. Great coast line , mountains and moose. Just avoid Bar Harbour in the summer a little chaotic with tourists. Plus I had one of the best American beers in Maine from a
brewery in Carrabassett. I think it was the Pale Ale.
